Over 100 years old, the El Dorado public schools have developed a proud tradition for excellence in education — success which is attributed to four facts: interested and supportive parents, motivated students, well-trained and caring faculty and a community that values education.

The district operates six schools: four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. All schools are accredited through the Kansas State Department of Education. The elementary student population is approximately 1,000. The middle school population is around 450 and the high school population is about 575 students. The pupil to teacher ratio is 17 to one. The average daily attendance for our students is 96%. Eighty percent of our high school graduates attend post secondary schools.  A new Skelly Elementary building was opened in 2012-13 and a new middle school will open in January 2014.

The El Dorado Public School District is recognized as a leader in the integration of technology. The district has a 1 to 1 laptop program for all high school students and all teachers. In addition, our middle school has a 1 to 1 iPad program. There is wireless access throughout the district.

El Dorado USD 490 is the sponsoring district for the Butler County Special Education Cooperative. USD 490 and the Special Education Cooperative employ over 300 certified staff and approximately 650 support staff.

USD 490 offers all-day Kindergarten. We have a 4-Year-Old preschool program and summer extended learning programs for students in Kindergarten through grade 12. We also offer an alternative program to our high school students.

Our students excel in academics, debate, forensics, student congress, scholastic competitions, and other contests in journalism, music, art, photography and writing. Fine Arts play an important role in our schools. USD 490 has a complete athletic program for students in grades seven through twelve with plans to add soccer in 2014.

In 2005, patrons approved the construction of a new high school building completed in August 2009. In November 2010, patrons approved a bond issue to construct a new middle school and new elementary school. The new elementary building opened in August 2012 and the new middle school is scheduled to open in January 2014.

Everyone associated with education in El Dorado schools is committed to preparing all children to meet the challenges of a changing world and fully committed to effective schools where every student is learning the established curriculum.
